Mia

"David has left," I murmur, turning to Izabel Templer. "All three of her protectors are gone."

Izabel's lips curl into a sinister smile. "Perfect," she purrs, her eyes flashing red in the dark. "You know what to do, pet."

I stare at her, nausea sinks in my stomach, my hands balling into fists as the taste of betrayal stings my tongue. I hate this. Caught in a tangled web where defiance isn't an option.

Yet, from mustering from somewhere deep, I scrape a fragment of courage. "I'm only doing this because you're forcing me," I declare, voice trembling.

"Of course, dear," she answers, her smile full of mockery. "Now, go on."

I wrench my gaze away, my chest heaving with shallow, painful breaths as I stumble back to our shared room. How many times have I wanted to tell Amber the full truth. How I’ve watched over her since she was a baby. How I snuck into Apollyon’s sanctuary without him knowing to find Amber there.

She was crying from when I told her about saving her as her real mom lay dying in a pool of blood and wiped the memory of the conversation from her.

The gris-gris I’d made was supposed to shield her power from those who would want it for themselves, but then she thought it was black magic and burned it. Now it isn’t just Izabel after her.

Now, Amber's trusting eyes haunt me. I can’t let her see my half-truths.

Amber's waiting, perched on her bed, gray eyes clouded with concern. Her glance pierces into me as I enter, and a chill runs through me. Does she know? But then, her grin replaces suspicion, and I paste on a smile that feels like a lie.

"Hey, Mia," she says in relief. "David's looking for Ashton. Maybe we'll finally get some answers.”

"He'll do his best, I'm sure," I force out, each word a struggle. My voice wavers, thick with emotion, the secret I'm hiding threatening to burst from me. It's there, clawing at my throat, desperate to escape. Her eyes are on me, wide, trusting, filled with a vulnerability that twists my insides.

“What would I do without you," she whispers, her voice trembling. “You’re everything to me.”

Her fingers slip into mine, warm and solid. Comforting. Terrifying. A pang shoots through me at her touch, so simple, yet loaded with meaning. I don't know what I'd do without her either, but the words stick in my throat, choking me.

Her trust is a heavy weight, her vulnerability a sword poised at my heart. The words are there, on the tip of my tongue, but they remain unspoken. I just squeeze her hand, praying she doesn't see the lie in my eyes.

“You’re my best friend.”

My heart aches, torn in two. I want to warn her, protect her, but the truth hides behind the forced smile I wear. "Of course, Amber. We're in this together."

All the while my mind spirals into chaos, dreading what comes next. I trace a sigil in the air while Amber's reading checking her phone again to put her under.
